Can't I just build my own website?

You absolutely can build it yourself. If I learned to build websites, so can you. And if you have more time than money right now, doing it yourself might be the right call.

Website platforms like Wix, WordPress, Squarespace and Weebly, plus payment processing tools and other CRMs that offer a website builder, will often try to convince you that you can just build your own website, which you absolutely can, but it's never as easy as they make it out to be.

A lot of my clients come to me after something went wrong: the person who built their site disappeared, and now nobody can log in to change anything.

A website's primary purpose is to effectively communicate your mission, your values and the way you do business. When you do that well, you connect with more and more people online.

The same goes for SEO. Its primary goal is to represent your expertise by clearly spelling out how, why, where and for whom you do business. That credibility and authority is what connects you to more of the right people through your website.

I've already made the mistakes, so you don't have to. The biggest one: thinking people will find a website just because it's live. They won't. Only about 3.5% of web pages get any traffic from Google at all (Ahrefs).

AI tools are changing the way that people use the internet, and an effective website will take that into account.

All the sites I build are set up so people searching for what you do can find them, and so you or your team can update them yourselves (if that is something you want to do).

What you get when you hire me

  • You work directly with me until you have a design you're proud of.

Everything is built around your customers: how they use the web and the questions they already ask you. The goal is a design that's easy to use and easy to find, especially by people who don't know you exist yet but are already searching for what you offer.

  • The one step I never skip: free analytics and SEO tracking.

From day one, you and I can see how people use your pages and where they come from. That's the baseline I measure success against.

  • And you're never locked in.

If you've lost access to an old website, sorting that out is part of my onboarding. You decide who runs it going forward, you or me, and you're never tied to a hosting plan.

One person, not an agency

You work with me, not an account manager. At most agencies, senior people oversee dozens of accounts and hand the actual projects to junior designers. I keep a small client list on purpose, so you get my full attention.

Before websites, I maintained airplanes: complex machines where dozens of systems have to operate together. That's how I see your website. Not just a design, but an inbound marketing tool built to bring you customers.

How a website project works

  1. I get to know your business.

I learn your sales process and who you're trying to reach, and I study your competitors to find where you can stand out. If you have a team, you can name one trusted contact.

  2. I map out your website pages.

A sitemap of the pages you need to catch the widest, most specific net of searches. You approve it before design starts.

  3. I design and create copy with your mission and your messaging in mind.

I start from your existing brand assets and ask for new ones if I need them. The design gets up to 3 full rounds of revisions, and you can keep refining the copy and messaging as much as you like.

  4. I launch your website, with analytics and search tracking already in place.

Most projects take 4 to 8 weeks. The biggest factor is how quickly I get your content and feedback. You're busy running a business, and I build that into the timeline.

Will people actually find my new website?

Getting found starts before design. During onboarding, I learn how your customers search, and I build your pages to be a helpful resource for them.

Ranking #1 on Google with a brand-new site takes time, but it's doable. Well before that, you can still get traffic and calls from search, and recommendations from AI tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity. The same things that make sites helpful and findable on Google help them get cited by AI.

How fast the calls start depends on your industry, your competition, your location and how motivated you are to invest in something like search engine optimization. It's typically a long-term investment, and it takes a little while before you really start reaping the benefits.

If you need more business right away, paid advertising can often bring it in much quicker and more affordably, especially if you want to use that revenue to help pay for ongoing investments like this. To keep traffic and leads growing from search engines and AI tools, I highly recommend an ongoing SEO plan.

What happens after launch?

Many clients hire me monthly to maintain their website and keep supporting it with ongoing updates, like creating new pages and doing local SEO. The goal is to continually find new marketing avenues to capture more website traffic and get your website seen by more of the people you can help with your business or organization.

Monthly plans include a detailed performance report showing month over month analytics and trends. Those who have an SEO plan with me also get recommended action items driven by the data I report on. Website hosting is included with any monthly plan.

What does a website cost?

Most websites I build cost between $3,000 and $10,000. Where yours lands depends on the scope: how many pages, whether you sell online and need payment processing, and whether you want me managing it month to month.
